Mitchell Sims,
Artistic Director
Mitchell Sims, Artistic Director and Conductor,
began his musical journey with piano lessons at age 9 studying with
Mrs. Mazie Chason in Bay Minette, AL. It was around the same
time that he sang his first solo beginning a life-long love of
music.
In high school he sang in various ensembles and was an Alabama All
State Chorus member each year. Studying Music Education at the
University of Montevallo brought him into the piano studio of Joan
Yarbrough Cowan, part of the Yarbrough & Cowan duo pianist team. In
addition, Mitchell dual-studied voice while at Montevallo in the
studios of Shari Boruvka and Dr. Benjamin Middaugh. He has performed
major roles in “Oklahoma”, “Annie Get Your Gun” and “You’re a Good
Man, Charlie Brown.”
Mitchell has served as a Minister of Music in churches since high
school and recently completed his 15th year as Worship Pastor with
Genesis Church in Foley. Since 1984 he has been employed by the City
of Gulf Shores Fire Rescue as a Battalion Chief Firefighter Paramedic. In
1992 Mitchell formed and conducted the South Baldwin Chamber Choir
in a performance of Faure’s “Requiem.”
Married to the former Lisa Lipscomb of Foley, he and his wife have
four daughters; Rebecca, Chelsea, Haley & Jordan. Rebecca followed
in her dad’s footsteps as a pianist while Chelsea plays violin,
Haley cello and Jordan violin. Mitchell, Chelsea, Haley & Jordan are
the Sims Family Quartet and specialize in classical chamber music
for weddings and other formal music settings. In their “spare time”,
Lisa and Mitchell have a spring-time plant nursery in Miflin called
“Lilies of the Field.” Family is very important to Mitchell and he
is excited to be a part of the very talented Coastal Chorale Family! |
